Thanatos
Profile Update

Thanatos was the best DPS in Saint Seiya Awakening for many years, and even today he is still one of the best units when it comes to dealing damage. He was one of the first to move out of turn to deal true area damage. His attack also breaks defenses, making him lethal to units that move many times in a round. He is the best counter to Frozen-type teams and is very easy to assemble, requiring no speed cosmos.

And after some time and with the Awakened Cloth Rebirth, Thanatos continues to be one of the most dominant SS units in Saint Seiya Awakening: Knights of the Zodiac, and his Rebirth solidifies his position as one of the game’s premier damage dealers. Rather than introducing a completely new playstyle, the upgrade enhances the mechanics that already made him feared: devastating True Damage, relentless pressure through Death Eye, and increasingly powerful area explosions as battles progress.

His signature Wrath mechanic remains the centerpiece of his kit. As Wrath accumulates through combat, Thanatos gains substantial Physical ATK and damage reduction before unleashing Final Power, a True Damage AoE that ignores defenses while permanently reducing enemy defenses and disabling their Legendary Cosmo for a turn. The Rebirth significantly accelerates this cycle by granting Wrath whenever marked enemies take actions, resulting in far more frequent explosions. Even better, each successive explosion becomes 50% stronger, allowing Thanatos to snowball rapidly in extended fights.

The most noticeable improvement comes from Death Gaze. Thanatos can now place two Death Eyes simultaneously, forcing multiple enemies to respect his burst potential. While the secondary mark deals reduced damage until it becomes the primary target, the added pressure dramatically increases his threat level. He also gains built-in Life Steal and reduced reflected damage, making him considerably harder to punish with defensive mechanics.

Despite these upgrades, Thanatos remains remarkably straightforward to build. Prioritizing his fourth skill is still essential, followed by his AoE passive to maximize explosion damage. He fits into nearly any composition thanks to his ability to generate overwhelming damage without consuming Energy, making him one of the easiest premium carries to slot into existing teams.

Overall, Thanatos is an elite damage dealer in the game, one of the most oppressives. Even if you don’t have the Awakened Cloth Rebirth, Thanatos remains one of the safest long-term investments in KOTZ.

+ Pros

  • Really easy to use.
  • Outstanding **True Damage** that ignores enemy defenses.
  • Rebirth allows two Death Eyes, greatly increasing pressure.
  • Successive AoE explosions become progressively stronger.
  • Built-in Life Steal improves survivability.
  • Fits almost any team with minimal Energy requirements.
  • Strong synergy with units that reduce enemy maximum HP or amplify damage.

Cons

  • Reflection effects can remain dangerous despite improved mitigation.
  • Secondary Death Eye resets its trigger if it becomes the primary target.
  • Requires high skill investment, especially the fourth skill.
  • Protective units like Oneiros can significantly reduce his impact.

Divine Punishment

Lv1Lv2Lv3Lv4Lv5

Deals 120% P.DMG to an enemy and grants Thanatos 2 anger. [Anger] Each point of Anger grants Thanatos 1% ATK and 0.3% damage reduction. Thanatos starts with 30 Anger and may have a maximum of 100. He gains 5 Anger when he and allies are attacked.

Skill 2

Terrifying Fate

Skill 3

Final Might

Lv1Lv2Lv3Lv4Lv5

When Thanatos' anger is full, he consumes all anger and casts Final Might, dealing 60% true damage (along with 100% increased ATK from [Anger], and shattering all enemies. [Anger] Each point of Anger grants Thanatos 1% ATK and 0.3% damage reduction. Thanatos starts with 30 Anger and may have a maximum of 100. He gains 5 Anger when he and allies are attacked. [Shatter] Enemies with this debuff will lose their Cosmo effects for 1 action turn. Their P.DEF and C.DEF are reduced by 5% permanently (cannot be reversed). When casting [Final Might], if Thanatos is under control effects, the effects will be removed from him (with the exception of Devour, Exile and Fight to the Death).

Skill 4

Gaze of Death - Awakening

Lv1Lv2Lv3Lv4Lv5

Thanatos gains 10% Life Steal and Reflect DMG each. The first 2 main targets attacked by Thanatos will be gazed upon. If they remain alive after 4 action rounds, the first target will take P.DMG equal to 1000% of Thanatos' P.ATK, whereas the second target will take half the damage. If Thanatos has more than 60 Anger, the damage he deals will increase by 20%. Gaze of Death will not target the same unit twice, and the effect cannot be stacked. Each time targets who are gazed upon take action, Thanatos' Anger will increase by 6. Every time Final Might is cast, its damage multiplier will increase by 10% (can be stacked 3 times).
